What Is Nerve Root Compression?

Nerve Root Compression is pressure on a spinal nerve root where it leaves the spinal cord. A herniated disc, narrowed spinal passage, or nearby tissue can create that pressure. Symptoms may follow the nerve’s path and include pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness in an arm or leg.

How Nerve Root Compression Works

Nerve Root Compression develops when pressure affects a spinal nerve root near its exit from the spine. A disc may extend beyond its normal space, or joint and bone changes may narrow the opening around the nerve. The pressure can interfere with normal nerve signaling.

The affected nerve root helps supply a particular region of the body. As a result, symptoms may travel from the back or neck into an arm or leg. A clinical assessment considers symptom location, sensation, strength, movement, and reflex responses. Imaging or a Nerve Conduction Study may add information when the findings call for it.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Newnan team

When we assess nerve root compression, we review the symptom pattern, movement, strength, and sensory changes together. We also consider how the spine and nearby tissues may affect the involved nerve root during herniated disc treatment.

Nerve Root Compression in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with a lumbar disc problem may feel lower back pain that travels into the buttock and leg. The pattern can suggest irritation or compression involving a lower spinal nerve root.
